Practical suggestions to achieve an amicable divorce.
You’ve heard the war stories about how messy divorce can be. You probably know someone who has gone through one. The truth is, there is only one person who decides whether or not a divorce will derail your life, and that is you.
Here are some practical suggestions on how you can achieve an amicable divorce.
1. Take a long, hard look at your finances
Chances are that you probably cannot afford a lengthy court battle. You need to understand that throwing mud during divorce proceedings costs A LOT of money.
2. Determine your “non-negotiables”.
It is so easy for the goal post to shift during divorce negotiations. Before you start negotiating make sure that you know what you are prepared to dig your heels in for and be reasonable.
3. Find a healthy outlet.
This might sound trivial and silly but it is important to find an outlet for all the emotions before you experience them. Make sure that you come to the table with a clear mind.
4. Communicate your intentions from inception.
Do yourself a favour by communicating your intentions from the very start. Do not fall into the trap of playing games and don’t just assume that your spouse “knows what type of person you are”. It is completely normal for spouses to get paranoid during a divorce so make sure you are transparent about the reasons for wanting what you are asking for.
